"You can make it OK
You can get married in Gibraltar, near Spain" John Lennon, The Ballad of John and Yoko
Many people dream of weddings abroad, but what about a British Wedding with guaranteed sun… sound too good to be true, well it almost is.
Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located on the Southern tip of mainland Spain with its own airport; it even uses The Pound Sterling and Euros. It also falls under British law including marriage laws and famously was where John Lennon married Yoko Ono as well as being home to ‘The Rock’ and wild monkeys. It’s about an hour away from Malaga airport and not much more from Cadiz airport benefitting from the weather that the Costa del Sol is famous for; as I sit here writing it is 30oc in mid September!
Ok - It’s hot and has beautiful coastline so what else…
It has many hidden gems. Today I will focus on three of them;
Having been where John Lennon and Yoko Ono exchanged marriage vows you might expect this hotel to be something special and you would not be disappointed. Its recently refurbished art-deco style is the perfect blend of 1920s charm meeting modern 21st century function. This along with the views across the Strait of Gibraltar makes for something really special. It has had numerous famous guests including US President Eisenhower, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Sean Connery, Errol Flynn and numerous others as you can see from the photographs that decorate their hallways. It was also where Winston Churchill’s daughter Sarah married. One unusual highlight is their new Moroccan style Marquee The Khaima.
If you are looking something that is ultra modern then perhaps a five star Mega-Yacht is more your thing?
Sunborn, Gibraltar and La Sala, Gibraltar have worked together on this exquisite treat that is one of Gibraltar’s most exclusive venues, a five star mega yacht wedding venue and luxury hotel located in the Ocean Village Marina. It looks as though it belongs in Monaco Harbour. There are spaces for indoor and outdoor ceremonies, an infinity style luxury deck level pool, beautiful bar and restaurant spaces and luxurious hotel rooms for every guest onboard. On my viewing of the venue I was shown the indoor reception room pre-setup for a wedding that afternoon, and it truly is a dream venue. For those of you who don’t like the water - don’t worry, it doesn’t move! This boat is truly the last word in luxury and a completely different style to the Rock Hotel. Gibraltar really does have so much to offer prospective wedding couples wanting a British ceremony.
The Rock itself can also host weddings at the summit, known as Top of The Rock weddings in The Mons Calpe Suite. You can see for miles, taking in views of the Costa del Sol, Northern Africa and Gibraltar itself with wild monkeys running around and birds of paradise twittering away.
