A Guide to Eloping in Spain from an Elopement Photographer in Spain

As an experienced elopement photographer based in Spain, I've had the privilege of witnessing countless couples create unforgettable memories in this beautiful country.

Elopements in Spain offer a blend of romance, culture, and stunning landscapes in and around some of Europe’s most incredible and historic cities.

If you're considering eloping in Spain, here's a comprehensive guide to help you plan your special day.

If you want to know more or have a question drop me a message.

My first and most important piece of advice in any wedding or elopement is; be true to yourselves.

Choose Your Dream Location

Spain boasts a diverse array of locations, each offering its own unique charm. Whether you prefer the historic streets of Barcelona or Seville, the picturesque beaches of Mallorca & Ibiza, the rugged landscapes of the Spanish countryside, or the mountains of Granada, there's a part of Spain that suits every want. Consider what ambiance and scenery resonate most with you as a couple when selecting your elopement destination. There are also so many lesser-known locations that I share below.

Research Legal Requirements

Most non-religious ceremonies involve a symbolic ceremony or vow exchange. The great news is by doing this, you can choose almost any part of the country.

Getting legally married in Spain can be complex for non-residents. Religious ceremonies can require in-depth paperwork. You can legally wed in your home country or if you are in Southern Spain you can easily legalise your union (in English) in nearby the British territory of Gibraltar. The union is legally recognised globally, including in the US.

If getting legally married in Spain, you may need to obtain specific documents and fulfill certain criteria. Consulting with a local wedding planner or legal expert can help ensure a smooth and hassle-free process.

Hire The Best Local Vendors

Collaborating with high-quality local vendors can greatly enhance your elopement experience in Spain. From florists and officiants to caterers and transportation services, seek out experienced professionals who are familiar with the local customs and venues. As a seasoned elopement photographer in Spain, I have built extensive connections within the Spanish wedding industry and can recommend trusted vendors to help bring your vision to life.

Plan Intimate Experiences

One of the benefits of eloping in Spain is the opportunity to create intimate and personalized experiences. Consider incorporating activities that reflect your interests and passions as a couple, whether it's enjoying a private flamenco performance in Seville, embarking on a wine-tasting tour in Rioja, sailing around Mallorca or exchanging vows atop a scenic mountaintop. These moments will not only enhance your elopement but also create lasting memories.

Embrace Culture

Immerse yourselves in rich Spanish culture and traditions to make your elopement truly unforgettable. Whether it's incorporating Spanish cuisine into your menu, learning a few flamenco dance moves, or participating in a traditional wine blessing ceremony, embracing the local culture adds depth and authenticity to your celebration.

Incorporate Fun and Your Personality Into Your Plans

To infuse fun into a city elopement in Spain, embrace your personalities and interests. Perhaps a shared love of art, dance, adventure, or something you both love. Share these ideas with your elopement photographer. If you are food enthusiasts, embark on an adventure to explore the city's culinary scene, indulge in street food, tapas, churros or even participate in a cooking class where you can learn to prepare traditional Spanish dishes together. By tailoring elopement activities to your passions and preferences, you can infuse joy and excitement into your special day, reflecting who they are. You can ride an (low-powered) electric Vespa around the streets of many cities in Spain via an app and without a bike license.

Moreover, embrace spontaneity and incorporate unexpected surprises into your elopement in Spain. Whether a spontaneous or pre-planned surprise such as a serenade from a local street musician or a flamenco show. These planned and unplanned moments of fun and spontaneity can add an element of excitement and joy to a city elopement. Allowing yourselves to be open to new experiences and embracing the unexpected, can create a truly memorable and one-of-a-kind elopement that reflects your spirit and love for each other.

Capture Your Day As You Want to Be Seen

As your elopement photographer, my goal is to capture the essence of your love story against the backdrop of iconic Spanish landmarks and scenic beauty in a way that is unique and personal to you. From the intimate exchange of vows to the candid moments shared between you and your partner, to stylish and fun photos of you as a couple I tailor everything to you.

Consider the Season

Spain offers all four seasons in varied amounts. Tourism is also a key thing to consider. A summer in day Barcelona, Seville or Madrid, can be very hot and crowded; the Autumn and Spring seasons can be a wonderful balance.

A winter or even Spring day in Granada can offer skiing, but a 90-minute drive south to Malaga or Marbella can often see sunbathing on the beach. Let me help guide you to what time of year can offer the best for your wants.

Relax and Enjoy

Above all, remember that your elopement in Spain celebrates your love and commitment to each other. Take time to savor every moment, soak in the beauty of your surroundings, and cherish the memories you create together. With careful planning and the expertise of local professionals, your elopement in Spain will be an experience to treasure for a lifetime.

If you're ready to embark on your elopement journey in Spain, I'm here to help bring your vision to life and capture every moment of your special day. Let's create memories that will last a lifetime amidst the beauty of Spain.
